Walter N. Muth, MD

Walter N. MuthWalter N. Muth, M.D. joined Dr. Piazza and Coastal Eye Care in 2002 after twenty-seven years of general ophthalmology practice as a founding member of the Wayne County Regional Eye Center, near Rochester, NY.

Dr. Muth’s medical career began in 1970, following graduation from Harvard College and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completion of an internship in internal medicine at Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. That year he joined the U.S. Public Health Service and served two years as a general medical officer and assistant surgeon in Kanakanak, Alaska where he and one other physician provided health care for the community and twenty-six surrounding Native American villages. The excitement and satisfaction of this work led to al life-long interest in health care in remote and difficult circumstances. In 1981, Dr. Muth traveled to Thailand to conduct cataract clinics at several camps serving Laotian and Cambodian refugees. In the summer of 1984 and again in 1986, Dr. Muth worked for the Grenfells Regional Health Service, providing medical and surgical eye care in Newfoundland and coastal Labrador.

Dr. Muth’s ophthalmology training was at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he completed his residency in 1975. He returned to the Rochester area that year and established an active medical and surgical practice and received an appointment as an Asst. Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. While practicing in New York State he served terms as President of the Wayne County Medical Society and President of the Medical Staff at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.

Dr. Muth and his family formed a strong and affectionate attachment to Maine, vacationing here each summer for twenty-five years until 2002, when Dr. Muth joined Coastal Eye Care and with his wife, Carol, made Maine his home.

Dr. Muth is now restricting his practice to medical and laser treatment of eye disease including a particular emphasis on glaucoma management. Dr. Muth is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a diplomat of the American board of Ophthalmology, certified in 1978 and re-certified in 2006. He is a Member of the Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
