Lawrence Piazza, MD
Lawrence Piazza, MD has been practicing general ophthalmology in Maine since 1992. After working for two years for a small group practice, Dr. Piazza established Coastal Eye Care, PA in 1994 to pursue his interests in advanced cataract surgical techniques and customized intraocular lens implant surgery in addition to the comprehensive management of medical and surgical eye diseases. Dr. Piazza has a particular interest refractive ophthalmic surgery including cataract surgery utilizing new technology intraocular lens implants and surgical techniques with the goal of decreased dependency on glasses as a visual outcome. He has attended extensive continuing medical education courses remaining current in such topics as presbyopic and astigmatic correcting intraocular lens implants (Tecnis Multifocal, ReSTOR, Crystalens, and Toric) and Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery with a Femtosecond Laser (LenSx). He has extensive experience in the use of monofocal aspheric intraocular lens implants’s and refining refractive outcomes with the use of Peripheral Corneal Relaxing Incisions (PCRI), and piggyback intraocular lens implants (IOL’s). Dr. Piazza is committed to bringing the latest innovations in vision correction and ophthalmic surgery to his patients in Downeast Maine.
Dr. Piazza is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and graduate of the AAO Leadership Development Program, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and is the immediate past President of the Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. A Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Piazza was initially certified in 1993 and re-certified in 2003. He was a Maine resident in the early 1980’s and again returned to Maine in 1992 after medical school and residency training. He graduated from Chicago Medical School in 1988, and, after completing a one-year internship in Internal Medicine, completed a three- year ophthalmology residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis, Missouri.
